Spring Planting at Hello Sailor

3.31.2014

Spring is here which means the world will once again turn green!  The greenhouses are beginning to fill themselves with all sorts of beautiful flowers, vegetable plants and fresh herbs.  I don't know about you, but I can't wait to bring a few of those young plants home to add some green to my own space.  A great way to do that is through container gardens and at Hello Sailor we have a lot of really fun containers that could make your container garden unique and beautiful.  Here are just a few examples, but we have so many more options in store!

Are you a novice at container gardens?  Well here are a couple tips:

1. Make sure whatever container you use, has adequate drainage for your plants, that way you don't drown them and cause root rot.  The best way to create drainage in pots is to poke holes in the bottom of your container but you can also place a layer of rocks in the bottom before adding dirt.

2. Consider the size your plant will grow before selecting a container.  Often plants look small and cute while at the greenhouse so you want to run and grab a small cute container to match.  Read the tags and figure out how large the plant will be when fully matured, you also need to consider root depth.   A plant that will grow four feet tall won't work well in a 6 inch pot.

3. Fertilize your plants.  Plants placed directly in the ground can acquire more nutrients from the earth than a plant placed in a container.  To keep your plants healthy and happy, fertilize.

There you have it!  Happy Spring and Happy Planting Everybody!  We are looking forward to seeing you at Hello Sailor this weekend, opening Friday beginning at 8:30am!
